A tradition of hospitality and innovation at your service

The history of Sporthotel Romantic Plaza, the exclusive hotel in Madonna di Campiglio, began in 1956 when Celso Maffei decided to buy land from the imperial family of the Habsburgs, in particular the Österreicher family, who loved Madonna di Campiglio already around the end of the nineteenth century, when the Princess Sissi spent her happiest moments there. In addition to the Austro-Hungarian elite, soon Italian nobility began coming here in the summer and grandfather Celso decided to build a small guest house on that piece of land, purchased at the price of 3,000 lire per square metre, where goats and deer would come to drink. It is the beginning of what would have been one of the most exclusive hotels in Madonna di Campiglio.

In 1960, with the inauguration of the Spinale cable car and the Grosté, at that time most modern technology in the world, winter tourism began to develop. Thanks to their passion and dedication to their work, the property, always owned by the Maffei family, began to become a reference point for a great holiday in Madonna di Campiglio. In 1984, Piero Maffei, the only son of Celso, and his wife Lucia, undertook the first major renovation which transformed the Pension Grazia into a city hotel in Madonna di Campiglio, Hotel Grazia and Plaza.

In the new millennium, Madonna di Campiglio, now internationally famous, continues the tradition of hospitality that has been passed down from generation to generation to today with Francesca, the granddaughter of Celsus. And after many years, with the commitment and enthusiasm of those who truly love their land and their homes, the second restructuring began, completed in 2013, that led to the Sporthotel Romantic Plaza, one of the most charming hotels in Madonna di Campiglio.
