Over time, we have hosted famous faces, different stories and important moments. And we continue to do so, with the same commitment as always.

From imperial origins to hospitality that looks to the future

The history of the Sporthotel Plaza began in 1956, when Celso Maffei purchased the land from a property linked to the Habsburg family. The area, once used as pasture, was gradually transformed into a hotel in the centre of Madonna di Campiglio. It was a family project, born of vision and practicality. Since then, hospitality has remained at the heart of our work, season after season.

With the arrival of the Spinale and Grosté ski lifts in the 1960s, Madonna di Campiglio began to grow as a winter destination. During those years, our establishment – which began as a simple, functional guesthouse – became a favourite destination for many loyal guests. The welcome was warm and friendly, the surroundings were well cared for, and the location was strategic. From there, a path of constant growth began, linked to the territory and its people.

In 1984, Piero Maffei, Celso's only son, together with his wife Lucia, decided to completely renovate the building. The Pensione Grazia was expanded and renamed Hotel Grazia & Plaza. This was an important step, marking the beginning of a new phase for the family business. Since then, the hotel has continued to evolve, while remaining true to its roots.

With the dawn of the new millennium, two further major renovations transformed the building into the Sporthotel Romantic Plaza in Madonna di Campiglio.

Piero and Lucia, approaching their golden wedding anniversary, remain firmly at the helm of the company, but the vocation of hoteliers and a strong passion for the hotel industry continues with Celso's granddaughter, Francesca, and great-grandchildren Teseo and Alidea.

Today, we welcome you with the same enthusiasm as before, respecting our roots and always looking to the future, aware that the land around us is our most precious asset: it must be safeguarded and protected.
